TOPEKA, Kan. -- With the end of the 2009 SCCA Pro Racing SPEED World Challenge Championships Presented by Toyo Tires comes the announcement of the inaugural World Challenge Fantasy League Presented by Bondurant winner. Following the conclusion of the ACS Monterey Sports Car Championships Presented by Bondurant, John Dearing, of Mission Viejo, Calif., was named the winner of the very first World Challenge Fantasy League and collected a four-day Grand Prix Road Racing School course from the Bob Bondurant School of High Performance Driving.
Each entrant in the World Challenge Fantasy League was asked to pick three World Challenge GT drivers and three World Challenge Touring Car drivers for each of the season’s 10 rounds, shortly after qualifying results were made official. The total cumulative points scored by the six drivers were awarded to the entrant. At the end of the season, each entrant’s three lowest scoring rounds were dropped. With 4,545 points, Dearing claimed the top spot in the 2009 World Challenge Fantasy League, nearly 300 points ahead of his nearest competitor.
“I think pure luck had a lot to do with it,” Dearing chuckled. “Each race I watched closely to the practice times and the qualifying times. My picks depended mostly on each driver’s qualifying times. Once I had this info, I waited to see the result of the coin toss. The coin toss would make me scramble for picking positions if the top qualifier lost! I also considered the experience of each driver and their ability to get off the line. I believe I picked a lot of drivers who were fourth or fifth on the grid to get to the podium. There were a couple of races I thought for sure I was going down the tubes!”
Dearing himself has previously driven in World Challenge GT, recording five race starts between 2004 and 2006 in a Dodge Viper GTS. Dearing joked that he hoped next year’s World Challenge Fantasy League would offer a funded ride in the series for the winner.
“Congratulations to John Dearing,” WC Vision VP of Marketing and Communications Dave Drimmie said. “Race to race he consistently made the right picks. Thanks to all of the World Challenge fans that participated throughout the 2009 season and thanks to our partner Bondurant for providing such a great prize to the winner of the league.”
The Bob Bondurant School of High Performance Driving is the Official Driving School of the 2009 SCCA Pro Racing SPEED World Challenge Championships Presented by Toyo Tires.
