Mid-American Stays Involved with ACS, Road America

FORT ATKINSON, Wis. -- Although there will be no stock cars cruising around the historical four-mile venue this fall, the Mid-American Stock Car Series will still be present in the annual American Cancer Society Run/Walk at Road America. MASCS co-owner Julie Strasburg and several other Mid-American members plan to participate in the event this Saturday, October 31 beginning at noon.

For the third consecutive year, Strasburg will lead the Mid-American Marauders team in fundraising for the run/walk. The team was given that moniker by MASCS starter Dave Sankey two years ago. “Dave put the name out there. I said, ‘so what, it’s fine. We’ll keep it,’” Strasburg said jokingly.

Though the team may be smaller without Mid-American teams present, Strasburg recognized the importance of staying active in the event. She said she felt the need to continue Mid-American’s show of support for the ACS.

“Nearly everyone has been affected by the word cancer, either personally, through relatives or friends,” Strasburg said. “The American Cancer Society is a very well known worthy cause continually working with the medical research to bring about a cure for the dreaded disease. I’m really happy to keep the series involved with such a great organization.”

MASCS competitor Louie Goss is one who has been affected by cancer through a friend. He and three friends will be joining Strasburg as part of the team, as they did last year. “It’s for a great cause,” said Goss. “Last year, it was nice to see all the different participants and get their stories.”

During the four-mile walk Goss will have his own stories to tell other participants about racing at Road America. In last year’s running of the Fight for the Cure Fall Classic, Goss recorded a career best finish of fourth.

It will be hard to contain that competitive spirit this year, Goss said. “I’m sure once we get close to the start/finish line someone will pick up the pace and we’ll be in a dead sprint.” He won the foot race amongst him and his friends last year. “I’m not only fast in the race car, I might actually be faster on my feet.”

Thus far, the Marauders have raised almost $600. Among the teams entered, they are listed as the seventh top fund raising team. Donations were made by several friends and sponsors of the Mid-American Stock Car Series, including MASCS event sponsor, Hankscraft, Inc.

Donations will be accepted through Friday and can be made by visiting the ACS Web site.
