 by Dick Jordan
INDIANAPOLIS -- The “Ernie Bose World Record Race” for .25 Midgets, with roots in Pomona, Calif., makes its second appearance this weekend (Nov. 6-8) at the new Orange Show Fairgrounds oval under the auspices of USAC and the Orange Show Quarter Midget Club.
The new track at the Orange Show has proven that the fastest quarter midget racing in the country still resides in Southern California and the sport’s first four-second lap was turned on May 18, 2008 by Matthew Wright. Jarid Blondel, now a USAC Ford Focus competitor, turned in the first four-second lap in Light 160 with a Honda engine at last year’s “Ernie Bose World Record Race.”
All quarter midget racers, regardless of sanctioning body affiliation, are welcome to attend and take their best shot at earning a “World Record Title” and a commemorative jacket.
Beginning with parking from noon to 8 pm Wednesday, participants will converge on the Orange Show for a weekend of racing, capped by Sunday’s action, which will be streamed live to a worldwide audience on USAC’s website, www.usacracing.com.
Open practice is slated from 9 am to 8 pm Thursday. Safety and Sign-Ins are scheduled from 8 am to 5 pm Friday, and a controlled practice session is on tap from 9 am to 6 pm.
Saturday’s timetable calls for qualifying and lower main events. Sunday’s main events will be followed by an awards ceremony. All Fast Timers will receive a clock plaque and Record Breakers will get an “Ernie Bose” Jacket. Main event winners also will be presented the coveted USAC medallion, emblematic of their victory and participation awards are designated for every driver, with main event trophies for the top four finishers in each main event.
Special #1 Chassis and Engine Builder in the Country Awards are also designated for the chassis and engine builders who walk away with the most “Ernie Bose World Track Records.”
On Saturday night, a special free taco dinner with dessert and 3D Movie (Brendan Fraser in Journey to the Center of the Earth) with popcorn and candy is also planned. Discount tickets are also available for those wanting to attend Saturday’s USAC “Budweiser Oval Nationals” at the Perris Auto Speedway. A NASCAR memorabilia raffle is also set for Sunday.
This year’s “Ernie Bose World Record Race” is presented by USAC, Hoosier Tires and the Haas foundation.
