WATKINS GLEN, N.Y. – The New York Governor’s Cup race is considered the premier race during the U.S. Vintage Grand Prix, September 11-13, and this year a field of 60 cars will undoubtedly make for a very exciting and competitive race. Fans are guaranteed to see action throughout the field as the top 60 qualifiers from five different car groups push their racing machines to the limit in the hopes of claiming the prestigious trophy on Sunday, September 13.

The New York Governor’s Cup is not to be missed by any race fan in attendance. The excitement will not be limited to the track however as special guest and grand marshal Lyn St. James will say the most famous words in racing, “Drivers, start your engines!” prior to the green flag dropping at 1:30 pm. The groups scheduled to compete are as follows:

Group 3: Recognized series-produced sports cars and sedans in production prior to 1972 such as the Triumph TR-3, Porsche 356, and Elva Courier.
Group 4: Limited produced sports cars, racing “specials” and GT cars built or in production prior to 1960 from makers such as Maserati, Ferrari, and Lotus.
Group 5: World Sports Car Championship and World Manufacturer’s Championship GT’s and prototypes as raced between 1960 and 1972, USRRC sports cars and Can-Am cars as raced before 1969, and front engine “specials” as raced after 1959 such as the Lotus 23, Porsche 904, and Ford GT40.
Group 6: Selected big-bore production sports cars and sedans through 1972 such as the Corvette, Shelby GT-350, Jaguar XXKE, and Barracuda.
Group 8: Recognized series-produced sports cars and sedans in production prior to 1979 such as the Lotus Super 7, BMW 2002, and Alfa Romeo GTV.

The New York Governor’s Cup will be one of the four “major” races on a day that will feature an incredible 15 races. The schedule includes the 24th Annual SVRA Collier Cup featuring only MG’s, the F-500 feature race, and the Morgan feature race which is properly named the Centennial Jubilee (100 Years of Morgan). The action on Sunday, September 13 begins at 8:30 am and goes until 5:00 pm. This is the perfect way to bring the 2009 racing season at The Glen to a successful close.

Don’t miss the Chemung Canal Trust Co. Antique Auto Show on Saturday, where fans can display their antique cars in friendly competition and take a parade lap around the historic track on Saturday afternoon. Tickets for the auto show are $70 and include one three-day general admission ticket, vehicle entry into the show, a parade lap, and a special gift. Participating cars must be at least 25 years old and the show is limited to the first 400 entries.

New in 2009: The State Line Vintage Auto Auction at The Glen will also be held on Saturday, September 12th during the U.S. Vintage Grand Prix weekend. The auction starts at 1:00 PM in the HGP Paddock area, just north of The Pyramid. The auto auction at The Glen is limited to only 160 vehicles, so consignors are encouraged to register their cars as soon as possible. The weekend will also include the Grand Prix Festival presented by the Chemung Canal Trust Co. in the village of Watkins Glen on Friday, September 11th where Lyn St. James will also be inducted into the “Walk of Fame” by the Village of Watkins Glen and serve as the Grand Marshal for the reenactment. Weekend tickets are still available and adult tickets are only $45. Kids ages 12 and under are FREE. Sunday admission is only $30 for adults.
